Outdoor ads will be prohibited in areas such as national parks, district forests, water bodies, historical monuments, among others

The state urban development and municipal affairs department of West Bengal has proposed a draft policy concerning signage, hoarding, and outdoor advertising, specifying certain locations where such advertisements will not be allowed. According to a report by Times of India, outdoor ads will be prohibited in areas such as national parks, district forests, water bodies, historical monuments, cremation grounds, graveyards, world heritage sites, areas classified as remnant endangered regional ecosystems, and religious sites, among others.

The primary objective of this policy is to balance road safety with the enhancement of aesthetic appeal. The draft policy emphasises, “The visual clutter caused by excessive signage and outdoor ads has become a concern. It is crucial to maintain a clear visibility and readability of traffic signs, signals, and road markings, essential for ensuring road safety.” By implementing these regulations, the department aims to reduce visual pollution and ensure a safer, more visually appealing environment for all.
